WELCOME TO THE OFFICE OF THE TAX ASSESSOR FOR THE UNITED STATES VIRGIN ISLANDS!

The primary goal of the Tax Assessor is to serve the people of the Territory by executing the mission and duties of real property tax assessment as set forth in Title 33 of the Virgin Islands Code.

The Tax Assessor ensures that all taxable real property within the Territory of the United States Virgin Islands is assessed in a fair and equitable and in compliance with the real property tax laws encoded in Chapters 81 through 89 of Title 33 of the Virgin Islands code.

The Office of the Tax Assessor is responsible for discovering, valuing and listing all real property located within the Territory of the United States Virgin Islands. To accomplish these tasks, the staff in the Office conducts research to discover who owns property, obtain the mailing addresses of owners, and to obtain the legal description, type, and value of property by multiplying the property value, less exemptions, by the applicable millage rate, which are all requirements set forth in Section 2301 of Title 33 of the Virgin Islands Code. In addition, the Tax Assessor is responsible for reviewing and granting credits and exemptions on real property taxes owed to include Homestead, Senior, Veterans, Disability, Farmland, and “Visitability” credits/exemptions.

Real Property is assessed at 100 percent of fair market value. The Virgin Islands does not assess Personal Property.

The Tax Assessor is responsible for establishing real property assessed values, approving exemptions, and certifying the Tax Roll to the Office of the Tax Collector within the Real Property Tax Division and the Cashiers that service the Office of the Lieutenant Governor. The Tax Collector collects all outstanding taxes owed to the Government of the United States Virgin Islands, including current and delinquent taxes. The Cashiers, under the supervision of the Business and Financial Manager for LGO, receive payments of real property taxes.
